Networking Has Become My Life!
As an entrepreneur, I think it’s important to network with like-minded people. I’ve found that it doesn’t always mean that I network with just wedding industry professionals though. A previous co-worker had told me about an entrepreneur group that she had just joined, so I thought I’d see what they were about. I attended one meeting as a guest, and now I’ve been a member of the Strathcona Entrepreneur Association (SEA) for close to two years. Honestly, it was one of the best decisions I’ve made.
We meet every second Wednesday at 7am and Brendan Goodchild of Goodchild Financial Services (goodchildfinancial.com) leads the meetings. We each discuss our past week and things that are new. We then give the floor to the presenter for that day. We learn about the company and the person behind the company. After the presenter has finished, Brendan opens the floor to certain discussion topics (advertising, social media, Adwords campaigns, ect). We benefit from the topics because we are finding out what has and hasn’t worked for each member. We get to skip the step of trying and failing ourselves.
The Strathcona Entrepreneur Association has members from many different types of companies. Within this group, it has smaller knit groups that work together with their clients. An example would be that we have a realtor, mortgage broker, financial adviser and home inspector that have worked together on numerous occasions. We are currently growing and trying to create more of these tight knit groups. (We’d love to add more wedding industry professionals!)
I always thought that I’d be able to keep my business and personal life separate. I expected the members of the SEA group to be acquaintances rather than friends. Thinking about it now though, they are friends and I don’t believe that’s a bad thing. I’ve definitely gotten to know them on a different level. When I recommend them to my clients, I know with all of my heart that the SEA members will impress. I recognize that every member is like me; we put our best into everything.
I’d also like to mention that because I am WPIC certified, I do NOT except vendor kickbacks. When I recommend a business or a vendor, I can assure you that I am not recommending them because they are paying me to recommend them. If they offer a kickback, I ask that they give that deal to my clients. That is how I can get some excellent deals for my clients.
If you, or someone you know, are interested in joining the SEA group please let me know. I will pass your information along to Brendan and we can plan for you to sit in on a meeting.
